Exodus 19:1 "In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. 2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount. 3 And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; 4 Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself."

In these first verses, God is reminding the Israelites how He saved them from Egyptian slavery. We need to be constantly reminded of how God has saved us from the bondage of sin or it would be so easy to slip back into Egypt! The eagle is a symbol of God in the Bible. It is a strong bird with immense wingspan. God uses this bird of prey as a symbol of Himself and how swiftly and mightly He swept the children of Israel out of the hands of the Egyptians.

Exodus 19:5 "Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD."

This was the beginning of the dispensation of the law. This dispensation extends from Mt. Sinai and the giving of the 10 commandments to the cross of Calvary and the giving of Salvation. No one has ever been able to keep the law except Jesus Christ. The Israelites told Moses here, "All that the Lord hath spoken we will do." They had no idea what the law would even consist of but they were sure they could keep it. The natural man cannot keep the law. The law was given so men would know what was right and wrong and strive to control his Adam nature but when man tries to keep the law by himself he always fails miserably in the attempt. Our nature is at enmity with God and we can never be obedient to Him on our own. I'm sure you have heard a good moral person say, "I am just as good as they are and I don't even go to church." Well, just being good , just keeping the commandments, is not enough. No one ever could keep the commandments and no one ever will be able to keep the commandments. By the way, just going to church is not good enough either! If you do not have the blood of Christ applied to cover your sinful, human nature, nothing else you can do on your own will help you when you face the judgement.

Exodus 19:10 "And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, 11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 12 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death:"

The people were to santify themselves before God descended on Mt. Sinai. Even though they were to wash and cleanse themselves, they were still not allowed to touch the Mount. I'm afraid we take our relationship with God too lightly today. We don't come into His presence with reverence as we should. Christians are much too casual in their worship with the mighty God of Israel.

Exodus 19:17 "And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. 19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. 20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up."

God descended on the mount in fire and smoke and Moses went up to meet Him. The people didn't actually see anything at all for no man has ever seen God, not even Moses! (John 1:18)

Do you take your worship time with God casually or do you bow before Him with the reverence He deserves? He expects us to cleanse ourselves and come humbly into His presence. You don't have to be in church or at an alter to pray but you do need to show the honor and respect to God that He deserves!
